Arnold Walker III wasn’t simply a former Alcorn State football player. He was one of the greatest to ever wear the purple and gold.
Alcorn State University and Brave Nation are mourning the loss of Arnold Walker III, a Hall of Famer whose name remains firmly etched into the history of Alcorn football.
Walker, who died in 2026 at the age of 35, left behind a football legacy that places him among the most accomplished players in the storied history of the Alcorn State program.
In fact, Alcorn State once ranked Walker No. 6 on its list of the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in school history.
That ranking wasn’t based on sentiment.
It was earned.
Walker played running back for the Braves from 2009 through 2013 and steadily built one of the most impressive careers in Alcorn football history.
He burst onto the scene in 2009, carrying the ball 119 times for 432 yards and three touchdowns. After suffering a season-ending injury in the opening game of the 2010 season, Walker returned the following year and continued his rise.
In 2011, he rushed for 713 yards on 142 carries and scored three touchdowns. He surpassed 100 rushing yards in four games, including a season-high 149 yards against Alabama State.
Walker led Alcorn in rushing again in 2012, finishing with 390 yards and four touchdowns on 119 carries.
Then came 2013.
A Historic Senior Season
Walker’s final season in the purple and gold became one of the greatest individual campaigns in Alcorn football history.
He rushed for 1,191 yards on 224 carries and scored 16 touchdowns, leading the SWAC in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
He also broke Alcorn’s single-season rushing touchdown record and scored 96 points, surpassing a 21-year-old school record previously held by Harry Brown and Tim McNair.
Walker rushed for more than 100 yards in seven of Alcorn’s 12 games and put together a remarkable streak of six consecutive 100-yard rushing performances.
Against Southern, he produced a career-high 156 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
His performance in the Circle City Classic earned him Offensive MVP honors after he rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
By season’s end, Walker had been named a 2013 SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, selected as a C Spire Conerly Award finalist and invited to participate in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl.
A Legacy That Endures
Walker finished his Alcorn career with 2,806 rushing yards, a mark that Alcorn celebrated as the program’s all-time career rushing record when the school profiled him in 2014.
He also finished with 566 career carries and 20 rushing touchdowns.
But statistics only tell part of the story.
For Brave Nation, Walker represented the tradition, excellence and pride associated with wearing the Alcorn uniform.
His name became part of Alcorn football history long before his passing, and his place among the school’s greatest players ensures that future generations of Braves will continue to hear his name.
Now, as Alcorn mourns his passing, that legacy takes on an even deeper meaning.
A Brave.
A Hall of Famer.
A legacy that will never fade.
